TBC Wildlife Recording Day VC43, Bettws Disserth near Hundred House - 20/05/2020

An opportunity to join Radnorshire (VC43) county recorders and help record all species in the private organically managed farm. Habitats include river, woodland, wet grassland, wetland, permanent pasture with mature hedgerows, orchard and natural spring fed ponds. The River Edw is an SAC and there are 2 SSSI zones. Along with carrying out general recording of all species it's an an ideal opportunity to brush up your recording skills and knowledge in the field. Full farm description below.

Farm Description

The farm is about 80acres. It has two SSSI zones and the River Edw SAC is on the lower altitude border at 250ft above sea level. The highest altitude is between 800-900ft. The buildings are at 500ft. The farm has been managed organically and with wildlife in mind for some decades now. There have been no inputs for 25 years and the farm has been under organic management for twenty years. A herd of cattle graze the fields in rotation. Habitats - unimproved grassland fields / permanent pasture, orchard, rose garden, 4 ponds fed by natural springs, mature hedgerows, semi-natural ancient woodland (about 12acres with bluebells), marshy grassland & wetland. Jenny Farrow NRW has notes on file. 1997 visit by the BSBI (Botanical Society of the British Isles) that looked at the SSSI and 2 additional fields and these include a full species list.
